Most of of the students at 5 Star Martial Arts/Renzo Gracie Los Angeles never thought they would ever consider competing in a martial arts tournament as an adult. After training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for six to twelve months, a number of our students become interested in testing their skills in a tournament competition against other BJJ practitioners at the same age, weight and belt levels.  At 5 Star Martial Arts, we have students from all walks of life who have competed including bankers, students, artists, entertainers, business owners, teachers, and entrepreneurs. Our BJJ competition team members has competed and medaled at major BJJ tournaments including the ADCC North American Trials, IBJJF Worlds, IBJJF Pans, IBJJF Masters Worlds, and Jiu-Jitsu World League, and SBJJIF Worlds.

Southern California is the biggest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling hub outside of Brazil and offers many opportunities to compete on a monthly basis. If you are interested in competing in BJJ, but have been on the fence about fully committing, here are 5 great reasons to compete in BJJ with the 5 Star Martial Arts/Renzo Gracie Los Angeles Competition Team.

You will challenge yourself: Challenging yourself with new projects and goals is one of the most exhilarating and enriching parts of life. Signing up for your first BJJ competition can be quite intimidating, but the rewards will be great. Regardless of how you perform out on the mats on tournament day, you will grow as human being from pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone, unlocking your human potential, and showing yourself what you can really achieve through focus and hard work!

Your BJJ will improve: Many of the students on our competition team train for weeks to get ready for their competitions. The training includes an increase in both volume and intensity with a focus on drilling and training live rounds. Through the increase in training and getting mentally and physically ready for a competition, your BJJ game will grow leaps and bounds as you prepare for your big day!

It truly is a team experience: At 5 Star Martial Arts, we pride ourselves for having a friendly and supportive training environment for all of our students. When our students compete, our coaches and students come out en masse to support the team. We truly act as a team and family.

Its a great learning experience: Renzo Gracie once said “There is no losing in Jiu-Jitsu. Only winning and learning.” Competition provides a great opportunity for you to learn a great deal about yourself and your BJJ game. Whether you win or lose, you will be able to learn what you did correctly as well as learn opportunities for improvement in your game. Additionally, you will learn a great deal about yourself in overcoming fears and achieving goals.

It’s fun!: Competing in martial arts is fun! The day of the event will feel like a roller coaster ride with the long ride up the first hill being nerve wracking, but after going down the first hill it will be one of the most exciting moments of your life!
